What are you doing this summer?

Kidsgrove Scouts - What Happens Next?

Whilst other guards may experience the 'winterguard blues' and miss the great friendships made during the winter season the Kidsgrove Scouts being part of a Drum Corps never experience this - for us winter moves seamlessly into summer!

How do you manage to do both?
For the members the weeks leading up to winterguard finals are very exciting. For the staff involved we are certainly wearing two hats - one winter and one summer.

The preparation for the summer season doesn't just start after Brentwood it started way before we even performed the first winter guard show of the season. Our 2010 summer production 'Heist of the Century' was conceived back in September 2009 even before we had finished the summer season!

How do the members cope with both?
We operate a rehearsal schedule which allows as many people to march with us as possible. In the winter for example we have Mums who march whilst the Dads look after the children and then in the summer these roles switch around allowing both parents to continue to enjoy the activity.

What have the guard done since Brentwood?
Its only been three weeks but they have certainly been busy ones.....

10 & 11 April
The members had a well deserved weekend off - where as the staff got together to finalise details for the summer and write some more of the equipment work.

17 & 18 April
We held our first full camp of the season and welcomed many new members. By the final run through on the Sunday the whole corps had done over 4 minutes of the show and as part of this the guard had completed almost 3 minutes of equipment work. An excellent weekend topped off by the drinks in the bar on the Saturday night!

Kidsgrove Scouts - St Georges 201023 & 25 April
The whole corps were honoured to be asked to lead the parades for St George around Kidsgrove. We also had rehearsal and recapped what we did at camp - another positive weekend and one that showed our home town the Kidsgrove Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps for 2010.

What else is planned this year?
This summer will be even more special as the whole Kidsgrove Scouts organisation celebrates its 100 year anniversary making it, we believe, the oldest Drum Corps in the UK. We have welcomed back a number of previous members as well as many new ones and the corps will be one of the strongest ever put out by Kidsgrove.

Our summer competition schedule has been confirmed and we look forward to another great season competing in BYBA, DCUK and DCE Finals in September.

The highlight for us this year though will undoubtedly be our two week tour of America in late August where we will be competing in Drum Corps Associates (DCA). This is a fantastic opportunity and we are really excited to represent the UK.

What about next winter?
We will be back next winter and will again put out both open class and junior class guards.

For us the whole winter process starts again in July/August as we start the search for our 2011 winterguard shows for both guards.

Being a Drum Corps and a Winterguard means it never stops but we wouldn't have it any other way!
